How to Verify Steam Without Using Your Personal Phone Number

6 August 2026

Steam doesn't require a phone number to create an account, but it does require one to enable the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator or to trade and use the Community Market without a 15-day security hold. That ties a real number to your Steam account just to trade items or skins normally — not ideal if you're testing, running more than one account, or don't want a gaming platform holding your personal number.

Steps

1. Rent a number for Steam — an instant rental covers a one-time phone-add verification.

2. In the Steam client or on steamcommunity.com, go to Account Details → "Add a phone number" and enter the rented number with its country code.

3. Steam sends a verification code by SMS, usually within seconds.

4. Enter the code from your rental's status page to finish linking the number.

Instant or monthly?

A one-time signup only needs an instant rental. If you plan to remove and re-add Steam Guard later, or expect Steam to text that number again for a security check, a monthly rental keeps it reachable instead of releasing it right after the first code.
